After spending over an hour trying to figure out how to “fix” a windowboxed video, I finally stumbled upon the answer on the MPlayer man page.
If you have a widescreen display and are as annoyed at having black borders on all four sides as I was, the solution is as simple as running:
$ mplayer -vf […]
